How Can I Evolve as a contractor?

Have you been contracting for a while but feel like something is missing? While a contractor always has to be learning, they always have to have something to work toward, too. How are you evolving as a contractor, and what’s your end-goal? Asking yourself these questions regularly will help you set fresh targets and reach new heights as a contractor.

How To Streamline As A Contractor

Looking to make your life as a contractor easier and optimise your working day? Here are some questions to ask yourself on a regular basis:

Am I charging enough?
Have you been contracting for a while but aren’t seeing much return financially? It may be that your rates are too low and need adjusting, despite your years of experience. Do some competitor research and ask existing clients within your industry what they consider a fair price for the services you’re offering. Adjust your rates where necessary.
How certified are you?
You may have years of experience contracting in your field, but do you have the credentials to show it? Completing training courses and getting certificates from relevant industry bodies can help to build confidence amongst potential clients when they consider you for a job; certification can also help financially when renegotiating contracts.
How balanced is your working life?
This is an easy trap for contractors old and new to fall into. Keep asking yourself, how balanced is your private and professional life. Some contractors can find working for themselves all-consuming, finding little time to recharge their batteries. Working with the right partners and getting support can be a great way to keeping that balance right.
How strong are your professional relationships?
As well as doing your daily tasks, it’s also important to work hard at building strong relationships and constantly networking with clients. Strong, personable business relationships simply can’t be bought; working hard on building those relationships could be key in the future to securing new business or meeting new potential partners.

How current is your portfolio?
Never forget to update your CV or your online portfolio. They can be so easy to neglect, especially if the contracts you’re working on are incredibly time-consuming. Keeping on top of your CV and portfolio is key to justifying your rates, showing the depth of your experience, and attracting new clients who may want to work with you.
How helpful is your recruitment agency?
If you find yourself getting the same type of client or are stuck in a rut in your sector, then it may be worth evaluating your recruitment agency. There’s no harm in researching other agencies and engaging with one as a backup either, should the clients at your current agency disappear for some reason one day, or if you just need a change of scenery.
Are you sure you want to be a contractor?
Considering all these questions, has your time as a contractor simply come to an end? Is the next stage in your evolution taking the step towards becoming a limited company, and becoming a boss with staff to look after? Maybe the opposite is true and you want to move from being a company boss to a contractor. Research the pros and cons of both before making your decision.
